Beautiful things on the horizon in Estrie: discover the projects funded for children in 2025

March 25, 2025

This year, Enfant Soleil is donating more than $1.2 million in Estrie to improve the care and overall health of children in the area. It supports over a hundred healthcare establishments across the province, in addition to giving vital support to the four major pediatric centres, which provide specialized and superspecialized care to all children who need it.

Discover several projects that will make our little sunshines glow with health.

Hôpital Fleurimont, CIUSS de l’Estrie – CHUS

The CHUS is much more than a local hospital for Sherbrooke residents: it provides specialized and superspecialized care to young people in the Estrie, Centre-du-Québec and Montérégie regions. As such, it has received major annual support from Enfant Soleil since 2004.

The 2025 contribution amounts to over $1.15 million. This will help fund various equipment, such as continuous dialysis devices for pediatric intensive care and feeding pumps loaned for home use to shorten hospital stays. This contribution will also support the intensive follow-up program for youth facing mental health challenges, launched last year, as well as the teleassistance project for specialized pediatric care.

Going to the ER with your child is stressful enough, even more so when a transfer is needed for specialized care. Thanks to telemedicine, the CHUS’ expertise is now available remotely at all times, giving children the chance to stay close to their families for greater comfort and stability.

In urgent or complex medical situations, teleassistance enables care teams at outlying sites to benefit from the expertise of CHUS professionals remotely. This innovative technology enhances patient care through real-time vital sign monitoring, promoting quick stabilization.

  • A ceiling-mounted camera can guide emergency teams in the Estrie region as they treat patients.
  • Holographic glasses with a camera enable the pediatric intensivist to remotely support responders in the ambulance when a transfer is required.

“Thanks to Enfant Soleil, we can innovate and improve the care and services offered to children in the region. This organization makes it possible to carry out various projects, whether small initiatives, the acquisition of new equipment or ambitious projects. Enfant Soleil is there to support the children of Estrie.”

Karine Duchaineau

Associate Executive Director, CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS

“Enfant Soleil is fundamentally something that benefits us all as a community, because when we take care of children as a society, we take care of all of us as well. Thanks to teleassistance, the children of our region will have real-time access to the best possible care.”

Other projects supported in the area

Robotic walker
This innovative technology provides physical support to children with motor impairments by assisting the movement of their legs.

The walker helps children gain independence, stimulate muscle development and boost confidence as they progress through their therapy training.

Equipment for newborns
A breast pump for home loan and a bilirubinometer will be funded. The latter will be used during postnatal home visits to detect newborn jaundice by measuring bilirubin levels in their blood quickly, gently and safely.

8 adapted high chairs
In the region, approximately 1,800 children receive speech therapy to overcome their language challenges. The new chairs will ensure safe and comfortable positioning, promoting focus and engagement during sessions.

Neonatal heart monitor
This high-performance device enables a precise assessment of newborns’ heart rates, providing more responsive and effective care when every second counts.

With the data received, midwives can quickly adjust care and make informed decisions, such as whether a transfer to a hospital is necessary.

50 balance bikes with helmets and racks
This equipment helps children to develop their motor skills safely, learning through play in a stimulating outdoor environment.

More than 200 children will have access to this adapted equipment, promoting inclusion and giving them the opportunity to fully participate in outings.

*Projects financed by the Sport and Sustainable Health Fund, which aims to promote and support healthy lifestyle habits in children through sports, physical activity and healthy eating while also fostering emotional and mental well-being.

15 track bikes with helmets
The addition of track bikes adapted to their size will enable all children to fully experience track cycling.

This grant will also relaunch the Goutz’y program, which encourages and supports healthy lifestyle habits in youth through sports and nutrition, while cultivating their independence, confidence and self-improvement.

Emrick Dumont, Estrie’s Enfant Soleil

He and his family help the cause shine in their region.

At Emrick’s birth, severe hypoglycemia led to his emergency transfer to the CHUS Fleurimont. After three weeks of testing, he was diagnosed with congenital hyperinsulinism. This rare disease affects insulin levels and threatens the brain if left untreated. Emrick’s early years were marked by frequent hospital stays and constant monitoring of his blood sugar levels. Drinking, eating and growing were major challenges, and the family had to reorganize their daily lives around his fragile health. Today, Emrick leads a more stable life thanks to a glucose sensor on his arm that enables him to track his sugar levels. He does gymnastics, dreams of playing soccer, is learning to listen to his body and continues to shine, supported by his family members, who demonstrate incredible resilience.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the various hospital foundations for their invaluable collaboration. As essential allies of Enfant Soleil, they brighten the lives of families affected by illness.
